Dream Update: Week 9

March 11:
For the longest time, I dreamed about being at work and putting together code sheets. Yay.

Then I dreamed about driving a big white truck without proper stickers for mean, nasty old guy. I was super nervous because I knew I didn't have the right stickers, but then I couldn't stop the truck at any of the stop signs so that didn't go so well.

Later, I explored an underground gym equipment storage place with Chuck. I discovered a corner that was filled with different puzzles, but I had to leave because it was too interesting and I knew I was going to get sucked in.

Later, I was an adventurer in deep jungle somewhere. I remember trying to pull stitching from a shirt I had with me, but I pulled wrong part and shirt fell apart instead of just the sleeves coming off.

Then I was walking on forest trail with old woman and few others. There were brown and blue eggs all over trail that we had to keep avoid stepping on. From behind us a duck with a million little ducklings ran between our legs and over out feet to get to the lake.

March 12:
A huge tub of gumballs spilled everywhere. My dream was like I was a video camera, rolling in front of them and through them and behind them. It was like a roller coaster. They rolled down streets and bounced off walls. The kids caught some of them in their mouths.

I dream that my parents lived in my old church. My mom was upset that she couldn't find her laundry basket where upon I realized that Zack and I had borrowed it and didn't bring back (sorry, Mom!). Later I was at a youth retreat. I dreamed that my brother Tyler was a baby and he took a nap. Then I was in a play where I went off script to give a speech about why D&D is fun and everyone should play–it was quite impassioned.

March 13:
Dreamed that I had a roommate and that I had decorated room for her birthday with streamers and glow in the dark stars. When she got home and saw it, she got crabby about it and how much work it would be to tear down. I was sad.

I went off to live in a tent by myself and some Northwestern runner girls tried to comfort me. Kyra, my sister-in-law, came to visit and told me she thought that her sister was going to be proposed to at the Christmas moon-watching event at Lake Superior. We went to the event in order to prevent the proposal. Kyra's mom gave me a candle and a lighter, but then the candle went out. I found a cold fireplace with one large log in the middle so I set my candle there where it was protected from the wind so I could try to relight it. The result, somehow, was flame everywhere and I ended up lighting the fire instead of candle. Everyone sad because that fire was not supposed to be lit until the last day of the festival. Apparently, they put log in there "the November prior" which somehow meant over a year, despite the fact that they burn the log just before Christmas each year.

I went down and sat on a rock by the lake and was sad. Tyler came paddling up in my kayak and we talked a bit. He tried to turn and paddle away, but splashed me with water. I told him to stop splashing. He tried to go again, but was still splashing. Then he accidentally hit someone's legs under the water with the paddle and they started bleeding and the paddle broke. He got embarrassed and his car appeared on the water. He loaded kayak into car and drove away.

March 14:
I dreamed that I had been hanging out in downtown Duluth and was trying to take a subway. I rode it once okay, but the second time I tried to get on, I couldn't get all my stuff off before doors closed, leaving them behind on the platform. So, I had to ride end to end while the people I was going to meet up with waited for me. Driver stopped at far end and smoked, so I had to wait for him.

I ended up waiting at mall where I ran into my cousin Jamie. She was there to connect with a witch who was going to tell her future. We went to attic place looking for something for the witch. My aunt Diana and other cousin Stephanie there too, digging through all this junk. Diana was going to steal special rocks from Jamie, but I found them first.

Later, I was on a cooking show talking to Chef Ramsey about how I don't understand chicken and waffles (which is true...I really don't get it). MoMai was competing on show but was considering quitting because everyone was mean to her. I told her, "Are you proud? Don't quit until you're proud."

March 15:
I dreamed a lot about being at work and doing boring work and it was lame.

But later, I was on the show Shark Tank and pitched my product confidently. They all said no. Then they said I talked too loud. I felt tears well in my eyes but refused to let them fall. Laurie from Shark Tank told me I needed to be stronger.

As I left my parents old bedroom (because the TV set suddenly changed into that), the sharks said "Where's Jenna? She needs Jenna."

I went to my mom's old quilt room, which had three doors but I locked them all so I could cry by myself, but then my dad was there sewing a double-decker bullet holder (that's what he called it. I don't know what that means) so I couldn't cry then either. I never got a good cry in.

March 16:
I was rooming with Jenna again, and she and I went to audition for a play at Northwestern. But we arrived separately and when I got to campus there was a confused boy and his mom trying to find MacFaden (which is one of my clients at work...but also apparently a building at Northwestern in my dream). I explained where it was, but he and his mom didn't get it. They were holding up traffic so I jumped in car with them and guided them to the building, which was placed behind Erikson. Then I  asked if they could give me a ride to MaHa so I wouldn't be late for the auditions. They asked, "What's MaHa?" I realized then that it was 7:13 and I was already late for auditions.

When I did arrive (about two minutes before auditions were over), I didn't know the songs, story or script. Afterwards, I was feeling super sick to stomach and went back to dorms where Jenna was eating Subway. I told her I felt sick and that auditions had gone poorly for me. She ended up getting the lead role.

March 17:
I was planning a D&D session where I wanted there to be an effect that, in a certain zone, if you rolled a 1 you would become invisible (but otherwise able to speak and act normally). Zack disagreed. Hunter and Carter, brothers-in-law, were also there along with Natalie and Mason (my niece and nephew) but Natalie was just a baby. I made them laugh by pretending clown nose was stuck on my face.

When I left, I was walking on dark street past these guys who looked like the three Musketeers (like the feathered hats and big gloves and everything) except there were four of them and one of them had a lute. When I was a little bit past them I turned around and one of them threw a sword to me. I missed catching it and it fell to the sidewalk, much to the dismay of the little audience that had gathered around us. We walked a little further and another of the Musketeer guys tosses scimitar to me...which I also missed. I grabbed a bag from one of the other guys. The bag was filled with metal rings which I took out, and crowd got excited for a show, but I said "I actually have no idea what to do with these things" and gave them back.

Later, I found lady with cupcake in small box. She thought I knew how the old "cup cake in the box" trick worked, but I didn't. So she instructed me through it. I put finger in top of box and pulled tab that opened the back of the box which then also pulled cupcake out just slightly so that I could look at it, get a little taste on my finger and then "magically" determine what kind of cupcake it was. The cupcake in her box was something disgusting (vinegar and something). It was a stupid trick, but I had a talking reindeer mascot who was very impressed by it, so there was an upside.

We used my deer's antlers tied to a post to make a tree prop.

Then I was in a group of adventurers being led by Aladdin on walkie-talking through a street and dungeon filled with traps. Going by his memory and our descriptions of where we were and what we were seeing, he'd jump in with a "Wait! No! There's a trap here!" as we're running through trying to escape bad guys and lava and such. As we approached the end, he joined us to cross finish line. As soon as we crossed the finish line and started high fiving, the floor pulled back and we fell into fiery pit where we had to fight the boss monster.

Dream Update: Week 8

March 4:
I was a young black girl, maybe seven or eight years old. My parents bought this old house/mall thin that they were working on renovating room by room. I became myself again. I was in the car driving with Anna and drove to the nursery where we used to be able to drive our car up and down the stairs there. But when we headed that way, there was no road. Ryan showed up to tell us where road was.
My nephew Charlie wore a sweatshirt tied around waist backwards so hood could be filled with cocoa puffs and he walked around the house eating them.

March 5:
My coworker Jochen had many elaborate fruit displays in back kitchen for us at work. He made a duck bill from pieces of pineapple and wore it tied around his face while he cut fruit for everyone. He later made balloon animal hats for everyone in the office and a Rice Krispie Christmas wreath dyed green. He expressed concern that he was going to be seen as just "the person who gives people tasks but not work" and that he'd be fired for it. People at work (Pat, Tara, Joe, Jochen and Katie) kept asking me how I was. I kept responding with "Was this the longest week ever or what?" And none of them agreed, which seemed crazy to me. My desk was where coweorker Joe's desk is, which is where I sat during my first weeks on the job while I was training.

I was in high school and trying to find a college. I came upon this really cool one out in forest that I desperately wanted to attend, but the college's advisors had to travel to see me so I could start there. They ended up coming late so I wasn't able to start on time. When they did arrive, though, they all gathered in my childhood bedroom and everyone sat on my bed to chat. They found an embarrassing note on my bedroom floor (which my mom then insisted on reading aloud) and I was mortified.

Dreamed something about Coffee Lake (that my grandpa's house used to be on) but I don't remember the details.

March 6:
I wasn't supposed to eat anything prior to going into the doctor's office, but I forgot–I had skipped breakfast, but eaten lunch and dinner. I went to the appointment anyway, where the doctor gave me 4 pills, which was too much for me and paralyzed me. The doctor was scary, and I couldn't do anything because I was paralyzed from the pills.

Later I was at my old house and the rest of my family had left already to go somewhere. I was going to meet up with them later. My sister Tawnya called and asked me to find her movie from library to return along with some books I already had to return. I went to her room but couldn't the movie. Instead, I found a Polly Pocket book.

My brother Tyler and I were swimming at the Borchardt's house. There was a hover board platform that he, Luke (his brother-in-law) and I stood on. I thought it would hover a couple feet above water and we could jet around, but Tyler kept going really, really high until it couldn't hover any more because of lack of water pressure. It would stall out and we'd fall back toward the water. At the last minute, the board would catch water pressure again and bounce back up. Eventually we bounced so high and far that we headed off the lake where we narrowly avoiding crashing into an electric fence by slipping between the bars

Then I dream I got body swapped with the mom of this random family, but couldn't tell the family because they'd just think I was insane and send me to some institution. I kept having to come up with reasons avoid kissing the dad, who was also super dumb. I went to the hospital for in vitro, but I didn't want procedure because this guy was so stupid, and also I wasn't his wife.

March 7:
I was living in a future (or not so future...) world run by corrupt government. I was at my old high school and my friend Lauren was killed by the government. Anna, Matt, and I playing cards at lunch. We rebelled by refusing to leave the cafeteria when lunch time was over. We were going to finish out game for Lauren. (It was quite the statement, somehow).

I started sneaking around trying to figure out what happened to her exactly and ended up getting into this really nice autopiloted car. I broke into a fancy office where all the records were held where I teamed up with a crew of adults who were looking into Lauren's death as well, but I was caught by government agents and put on a ship to exile on earth somewhere (because apparently all the rest of this dream had, unbeknownst to me, not occurred on earth to this point).

March 8:
Dreamed I was at Bible camp and went to the upper balcony of the church to escape all the people, but they all came and joined me anyway. In our lessons, the only verses they looked at were about wives serving husbands, so I called them on it. Everyone thought I was overreacting, which was super frustrating. Channing and her boyfriend were going to break up. He told her the only way he'd stay with her was if they had counseling with thee camp people, which I knew was such a bad idea based on the camp's teachings.

Tyler and Kyra got married in the church with confetti flying everywhere and a photographer whose photos were all over exposed and flash-filled. A high school friend Barbara and I played a game with toy dinosaurs, dice with cameras in them and chocolate pudding (no, I don't remember how that particular game worked). Meanwhile, my dad went out to the meadows and forests, and I was jealous.

March 9:

High school friend Ronne was having a class party at her house. I arrived in the morning and I was looking for breakfast. She just said, "In the cupboard." But there are soooo many cupboards in this giant kitchen, and that's not even mentioning the second kitchen upstairs. Eventually I made toast, but I left in my sweatshirt pocket and it got all hard and dried out. We went outside to play badminton, but the trees and branches kept getting in the way.

My mom picked me up to go run some errands with her. I was driving and as we headed out, my mom warned me that the brakes didn't work. I pulled e-brake to slow us down when we had to stop, but we still kept going. Eventually we ended up in the parking lot at a hockey game in Canada at night. We crashed without causing injury. The police didn't believe that the accident was caused by faulty breaks.

My friend Andrea was in music classes, but was tired by them. She said her piano class was only one going well. She played "Go Tell It on the Mountain" while I sang. Some random guy sang along too.

March 10:
I was either living out or just playing d&d throughout the dream–it switched back and forth pretty frequently. Our party (Adam, Zack, Paul and Matt) was in the Sahuagin fortress where we'd just killed a bunch of sahuagin but still had more to go.

We were suddenly joined by a bunch of other players, which made me sad because the group was far too large then to have fun. The other players included some of the cast of critical role (Tiberius for sure) and a few Northwestern people.

One girl kept asking "What's the symbolic significance of the Sahuagin fortress being a tower/cliff like it is?"

And Adam answered every time, "There is significance, but you haven't discovered it yet."

Paul and I decided to head up the side of the fortress while Zack and Matt went another way. Our plan was to meet up somewhere in the middle, but when they didn't catch up to us, I went back and found Zack sitting under a tree, hidden in pine boughs. He told me he'd sprained his ankle and couldn't continue.

Back with the large group, we decided that the table was too big and so split into different groups, which split up or original party and landed people rotating in and out of the game, but no one really getting the full experience. When they weren't playing, people spread out around the house playing other board or video games. I ended up with a bunch of girls I didn't know, which was okay, but not ideal.

I was at a lecture at Northwestern and someone in the audience farted during the speaker's presentation. The whole hall got into a debate about who it was and why people are shy. Zack kept arguing that girls don't fart, so it couldn't have been a girl. At some point I looked around at everyone and said, "Here we are, in a room full of college-educated people, and all you can talk about is farting? Really?"

A Story in 5 Sentences

I'm somewhat enamored with the idea of short short stories. They're fun frustrating challenging to concoct, delightful to read, and even better to ponder as they tell us something about the human experience. About how a few words can evoke emotion sometimes even more effectively than thousands. About the things we, as humans, empathize over, without even saying it.

Short short stories remind me that the whole world shares that secret language only the best of friends understand...if only we can find the right words.

All this to say–I was recently challenged to write a story in five sentences. This was my result:

It's weird, the way the wind gushes up against the soles of your shoes when you stand on the ledge outside your office window, eyes closed, wondering what a twenty-three story drop would do to you. When I lift my foot, the crowd below coos in response, their twittering–iphoned and audible–freezing the moment.

Today could be the day.

Today–the day of broken excel formulas and circulation audits and office walls the color of dead IBM monitors–could be the day...but it's not.

I duck back through the window, return to my desk, and sigh at the way my feet still feel lifted from below while my fingers reengage the qwerty that glues me to the world.

Dream Update: Week 7

February 26:

I was walking along a busy sidewalk in the springtime. Out of nowhere comes one of my old roommates Melissa on roller blades with her dog dragging her. I moved to side and crouched down to get out of the way of their rampage, but at last second she decided to jump over me instead of passing by me. I ended up getting kicked in the face by her roller blades.

Later, I was feel so sick that I didn't go to Christmas with either side of the family's grandparents. Zack did go though, and he brought me back candy coated sunflower seed "cashews" from his grandparents (the jar said cashews, but they were sunflower seeds...neither of which I like) and a devotional from my grandparents (one side) but I didn't get anything from my grandma on the other side.

Then I discovered a hoard of weevils on top of the cupboard–which was a little too close to reality for comfort because a couple weeks ago I did actually discover a hoard of weevils in the (new, unopened) bag of flour I had. Apparently I am still scarred from that little encounter.

February 27:

A sort of jumpy dream where I was either in a fantasy world or I was running a D&D game (and it flipped back and forth a lot). I attended/ran a dwarf wedding, which, in the world, consisted of the couple putting Chapstick or lipstick on each other and then kissing to seal their marriage. Jenna and Zack both attended the wedding.

Later Jenna and I ran this mud race together and, at the end, had the chance to do it again. We were going to, but the line was way too long. While we walked back to the car amid fields of mud, we fought some sort of large creature, though I don't recall what it looked like now.

February 28:

Apparently this is my dream game mash-up
I was playing a board game that was sort of like Sentinels of the Multiverse meets Betrayal at House on the Hill. The game was played on a board but only outside squares were filled in while the inside squares remained blank for players to populate. Each player assumed the role of  a notorious villain and had a hand of cards. They could play cards on people or on the board depending on the card type and would win the game by being the last villain alive. There was a GM there as well, but I'm not sure why since the game ran without his input just fine.

Later, my friend Anna and I were at this large, wooden table in a restaurant chatting. Matt (another friend from high school) suddenly appeared a little further down the table sketching in a notebook. The lights suddenly became very bright, but he assured us that he needed the light for his sketching. He told us he was working here at this restaurant for the time being while his art career got off the ground.

February 29:

I was a red-haired teenager in a future world where women couldn't get pregnant naturally. Somehow, though, I ended up getting pregnant, and everyone was just fawning over me. My best friend in the dream was upset and felt ignored because of all the attention on me until I told her I wanted her to do the delivery rather than the best of the best nurse they'd assigned to me.

March 2:

I was at my old house with the quartet I sang in in high school. We were singing "All I Want for Christmas is You" in G. Alyssa commented that, "At least we got past B".

I was riding in a car and realized there was a spider under the seat. There was some panic going on and all of a sudden the car on fire (maybe I decided it was a small price to pay to kill the spider? I'm not sure). There was also a prince there who was fat and spoiled. After I helped put out fire for him, he stopped acting like such a brat though.

I was going to take a shower in a public restroom and was excited because the big shower in handicapped stall was open and no one else was around. Then some random guy tried to take I from me (which wasn't at all weird in the dream, but now that I think about it...) In any case, I said no and he went away.

March 3:

I was at my friend Anna's grandma's wedding where I spent a lot time just trying to get through the crowd. I wore hot pink tank top and a sweatshirt and white shorts. As I escaped the crowds, I ended up exploring an underground dungeon and realized that I was a warlock. I never actually ran into any monsters in the dungeon, but sensed them all over. Still, I chose the creepy dank dungeon over the pressing, small-talking crowd upstairs.

Then I was on a game show that was supposedly The Price is Right, but was also sort of Jeopardy, but also you could just make stuff up to try to one up your opponents. Things like: "I can curl my tongue." And the whole audience would go, "Ooh!" Yeah. Burn.
